Gordon A. Reid, Visual Artist

The artist became a painter in his mid forties while actively engaged in an advertising career, and as a freelance cartoon illustrator. At a Continuing Education summer school session in 1983 he studied with Peter Porges ( Mad Magazine ) at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. It was during this session that he was encouraged to experiment with taking a small pen and ink illustration to the large format acrylic painting on canvas. This step was difficult in as much as the short life immediacy of a widely distributed illustration doesn't readily transfer to the long life permanence of a limited exposure painting. The process matured a little in four subsequent Studio Residencies at SVA under the direction of the distinguished American painter and teacher, Nancy Chunn. Reid choose a satirical theme based on the current beginnings of our all persuasive consumer culture after World War 2, which his advertising career had prepared him for. The paintings are historically placed in 1948 a year at the tail end of an exciting two decades of industrial design that the artist likes to portray. Each painting has a storytelling title that is important to the appreciation of the visual work.
